Mother's Day

May 8, 2018

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. I wanted to prompt you today to think about something that your mom (and probably also your dad) did for you…they gave you a name.

Take a moment to think about your name. Do you know how you got it? Is there a funny or an endearing story about it? Do you know it’s meaning? As a parent, I know I thought about my children by name before they were even born. I remember pondering different ways of saying their name, different nicknames that it could be shortened to, yelling it as I imagined calling them home for dinner. Then when they were born, I remember looking into their eyes and saying their name to them as they now officially owned it. Having twins this is a big thing. Do we name them rhyming names? Do we know which one will be which? And then how do we remember? To be honest, we kept their hospital name bands on for about a week until we started to notice things about them that were distinct enough to know which one was which.

Still, to this day, when you are around twins, you can notice different things about each and start to associate which name goes with which person. Think about that for just a moment—it’s not exclusive  to twins. When you meet someone new, you start to recognize certain things about them that help you to remember them as a person…even beyond their given names.

Sometimes, though we carry around more than just our given name. We have been told at one time or another that we carry a different name. We take on these names because of something someone told us we were or we were not. Maybe we had a deep experience that helped to form an idea of who we are by name and we carry that around. Sometimes we even introduce ourselves as things that define us other than our name: Hi, I’m Jill, I’m a mom, a nurse, a yoga instructor, and most of the time a big ol’ mess.

What if we were to introduce ourselves with some of the things we have heard in this world or thought about ourselves?

Hi, I’m a mess. Hello, I’m unworthy. Good to meet you, I am a disappointment who always falls short. Hi, I’m the only one dependable enough to save the family, the workplace, the world. Oh, how do you do? I’m a mistake, unwanted, not pretty, too large, a misfit, a sinner, a screw up. Welcome, come in, have a seat, I’m not worth your time.

Who gave you the names you think of that you identify yourself with? Where, along the way, did you come to the realization that you must live up to something in order to be worthy of the ACTUAL names The Father has given you.

Your FATHER…my Father, was so proud of His creation in us that He, ALONE, has naming rights. He is, after all, our creator, our maker, the One who called us into existence. The One who has counted every hair on our head, the One who knew us before we were born…the same One who loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die on the cross so that after we are finished on this side of glory here on earth, we can join Him again for all eternity.

And what does He call us…since He truly is the only One who should have the rights to name us?

Chosen. Worth more than the sparrow (Matthew 10:31). My daughter, my son. Called. Loved. My people (Jer 30:22). The branch to His vine (John 15:1-5). No longer a slave, but a friend (John 15:15), Justified and Redeemed (Romans 3:24). An heir to heaven (Romans 8:17). Accepted (Romans 15:7). A temple in which the Holy Spirit lives (1Cor 6:19). A new creation (2Cor 3:14). Blameless and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7). Complete (Colossians 2:10). Holy and beloved (Colossians 3:12)

That’s who we are in the eyes of our Father. Thats who HE says we are…and He sees all, knows all, made all…so, when you think about that, it’s a bit overwhelming, no? How could He possibly call us these things? We know what we feel here on earth, we remember what we’ve been called before, how we have felt, how we didn’t measure up……….BUT that’s not our name!

He is the only one with naming rights. The Father. The Maker.

What does He call you?

What is your name?

END:

But now, this is what the Lord says—He who created you, [Jacob], He who formed you, [Israel]: “Do not fear for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

That is who we are. He has called us by name…by the name He, the Father, has given us.

To your mother, you are called “Daughter,” by your children you are called “Mother.”

By your Father in Heaven you are called Chosen, Worthy, Forgiven, Friend, Complete……..Beloved.
